Gov. Jeff Landry has signed a state of emergency in wake of the severe storms that ripped through numerous areas throughout the state last week.

The declaration, which Landry signed Tuesday, allows for the funneling of state resources to parishes affected by high winds and multiple tornadoes that touched down on April 10.

For debris removal in Pointe Coupee, West Feliciana, St. Landry and St. Tammany, 75% of costs will be covered by state resources.

The state will cover the same percentage of costs for shelter assistance in St. Tammany. The same percentage will be covered by the state for overtime pay related to the weather in Pointe Coupee, West Feliciana, St. Landry and St. Tammany.

Thousands were without power for days in both St. Tammany and West Feliciana parishes due to damage incurred during the storms.

Landry toured both parishes on Monday.

The declaration is in effect through May 16.
