Gov. Jeff Landry made a fool of himself about the national anthem being played when the LSU women’s basketball team was praying in the locker room before the Iowa game.

First, I am from Tickfaw, Kim Mulkey’s hometown, so I am biased. Landry messed up big time. His politics, for me, are right. I voted for him more than once and may do so again, but his shameless political shot at our coach crossed the line.

Knowing who she is, where she comes from, how she doesn’t shy away from strong positions, the governor of all people should consider her to be the last person on his political hit list.

His response is that’s not what he intended, however, that’s the way it was interpreted when he attacked her and our proud coterie of mostly Black female athletes who were praying in the locker room and not intentionally avoiding being on the court for the national anthem.

Landry was and is wrong for using this event, this time, to make his point. His criticism implying that Mulkey and her team praying during the national anthem was unpatriotic is absurd. Shame on Landry for engaging in such a cheap political stunt. And Mulkey shouldn't worry about the governor. Even his supporters, including me, think he’s full of it.
