In Livingston Parish, a measure to renew a property tax that pays for the library system passed by only 168 votes out of 18,372 votes cast Saturday, according to complete but unofficial results.

That was one of several local elections and tax measures decided in the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÍ¿ª½±ÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ area while voters statewide gave Republicans control of Louisiana state government in runoff elections for treasurer, secretary of state and attorney general.

The library tax, which generates about $6 million per year, will be extended for another 10 years. It accounts for more than 95% of the library system's operating budget.

The renewal had never gotten less than 68% of the vote in previous elections, library officials said. But Livingston voters have recently been in a tax-cutting mood, having rejected renewals for both the parish health unit and a local recreation district.

In West Ïã¸ÛÁùºÍ¿ª½±ÀúÊ·¼Ç¼ Parish, voters elected Jeff Bergeron, of no party, over Leo Fontenot, a Democrat, to be sheriff. Bergeron won 68% of the vote to Fontenot's 32%.

Sheriff Mike Cazes is retiring after almost two decades as the parish's top law enforcement official. Bergeron is deputy director of the Louisiana Bureau of Investigations, overseeing its investigative unit, cyber crime unit, fugitive apprehension unit and trial unit.

Several local seats in the state House of Representatives were also decided in Saturday's runoffs:

  • District 18: Jeremy S. LaCombe was reelected with 55% of the vote to Tammi Fabre's 46%. Both are Republicans.
  • District 63: Barbara West Carpenter successfully held her seat, defeating Metro Council member Chauna Banks 64% to 36%. Both are Democrats.
  • District 64: Kellee Hennessy Dickerson defeated Kellie Alford, 60% to 40%. Both are Republicans.
  • District 65: Lauren Ventrella won with 56% of the vote to Brandon Ivey's 43%. Both are Republicans; the seat was previously held by Ivey's brother, Barry Ivey.
  • District 66: Emily Chenevert defeated Richie Edmonds 60% to 40% in the race to replace Edmonds' father, Rick Edmonds. Both are Republicans.
  • District 68: Republican Dixon McMakin, a Republican, won 57% of the vote to Democrat Belinda Creel Davis' 43%.
  • District 70: Incumbent Rep. Barbara Reich Freiberg, a Republican, held off a challenge from Democrat Steve Myers by a margin of 65% to 35%.
