The National Hurricane Center has issued a special tropical weather outlook message for a low pressure system in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean that it's giving only a 10% chance of turning into a tropical depression or storm over the next seven days.

"An area of low pressure located about 900 miles northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands has been producing a small but persistent area of showers and thunderstorms to the east of its center since this morning," said the message, issued at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Tropical system?

The National Weather Service has issued a special tropical forecast message for a patch of thunderstorms, off the coast of Africa in this satellite photo. Forecasters give it a small, 10%, chance of forming a tropical system over the next seven days. (NOAA GOES East satellite)

The message said the low is forecast to move southwestward at 10 mph to 15 mph into an area of stronger upper-level winds overnight and on Thursday, which is likely to disrupt its formation into a depression, so additional development isn't expected.

Additional outlook messages won't be scheduled for this system unless conditions warrant, the message said.

While the official start of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season isn't until June 1, the center will begin issuing regularly scheduled tropical weather outlooks on May 15, with additional special messages being issued as needed.
