A Hammond man pistol-whipped someone at an apartment complex, then fatally shot the victim’s brother when he confronted him, a Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.

Tyrell Brister, 21, was arrested in the shooting death of Malcolm Toney, 28, shortly after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Tangi Village apartments on Quick Boulevard, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A Sheriff’s Office spokesman said that, before the shooting, Brister had beaten Toney’s brother at the apartments. As Brister was getting into his car to leave the scene, Toney came out to confront him and Brister shot him.

Toney was transported to the hospital, where he died of his wounds.

Brister was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish jail Wednesday on counts of second-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault by drive-by, home invasion, simple criminal damage to property, illegal discharge of a weapon and second-degree battery.

Sheriff’s Office investigators identified a second suspect, Monica Haynes, also known as Monica Sims, 39.

Haynes was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Police said the woman was wanted on counts of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder, accessory after the fact to aggravated battery, accessory after the fact to aggravated assault by drive-by and obstruction of justice.
