A Denham Springs woman arrested in the 2020 death of a transgender woman has pleaded to manslaughter and received a suspended prison sentence, officials said.

Lynette Muse, 37, pleaded no contest to manslaughter, a felony, according to the St. Helena District Attorney's office. Judge Erika Sledge sentenced Muse to 15 years with the Department of Corrections, but the sentence was suspended.

Instead, Muse will serve three years of probation. She also must pay various fees and will appear for felony monitoring in March of this year. At the time of her arrest, she was charged with second-degree murder.

The body of Shakie Peters, 32, was found off Opal Bennett Road near Amite in the summer of 2020. A second suspect, Christopher Causey, 37, was also arrested in the case. He was found not guilty of second-degree murder by a jury last year.
