Heavy rain moving across south Louisiana is brining the potential for flooding and severe weather causing some schools in Acadiana to announce closures. 

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is ongoing as most of south Louisiana is under a flood watch, according to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles. Excessive runoff is causing rivers, creeks and other low-lying areas to flood. 

The area saw about two to five inches of rain with some isolated areas seeing more than six inches Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, according to the NWS. An additional three to eight inches are possible through Thursday. 

Lafayette, St. Martin, St. Mary and parts of Acadia and Vermilion parishes are expected to receive between six and eight inches of rain total. 

ACADIA PARISH SCHOOLS

Acadia Parish School Board closed its schools and district offices Wednesday. It will likely return to normal operations Thursday, the district said in a statement. 

"Our students, staff and the overall safety of the community are our priorities," Superintendent Scott Richard said in a statement. 

EVANGELINE PARISH SCHOOLS

Evangeline Parish public schools and district offices closed Wednesday.

ST. LANDRY PARISH SCHOOLS

The St. Landry Parish School Board announced it closed its schools and district offices Wednesday because of flooding and impassable roads.
